"Do you ever just get down on your knees and thank God that you know me, and have access to my dementia?!" --George Costanza

Jan 03, 2007

All you have to do is say that five blades can happen, and it will happen. If you aren't on board, then fuck you. And if you're on the board, then fuck you and your father.

I'm really enjoying Keith Law's baseball writing on ESPN.com and ESPN Insider. He's smart, knowledgeable, has an insider's perspective, and drops in a lot of culture -- both classic and pop -- in his work and chats. And now I see they've let him write for Page 2.

Which is really welcome, since Page 2 has been in a tailspin since they...

...canned Whitlock and Shanoff

...decided to continue publishing Jim Caple's lowest common denominator, Two and A Half Men-level, "Haha, the Yankees spend a lot of money!!!!!"... uh... "humor"

...let Simmons leave for L.A. and become a parody of himself (but with a giant ego)

...allowed Gregg Easterbrook to come back

...let Ralph Wiley die.

Ok, ok, maybe that last one wasn't their fault.

Anyway, I mention the Law column because in his MLB offseason in review, he gives us this section:

The "We're Doing Five Blades" moment of the offseason.

The Yankees certainly didn't expect to be outbid by a factor of two on Daisuke Matsuzaka – a pitcher half of the Yankee blogosphere was penciling into the Bombers' 2007 rotation before the WBC had even ended – so when the next Japanese hurler was posted, the Yanks decided to go a little crazy-go-nuts. Kei Igawa would probably be a good fourth starter in the NL, but in the American League East – especially with that strong right-handed lineup in Toronto – he's a fifth guy, and perhaps is best suited for the bullpen. No matter: The Yanks bid $25 million, reportedly twice what any other team bid.

Regular readers (and Onion fans) will recognize the reference to a piece I've mentioned... oh, just a few times.

A brilliant -- and well-used -- ref. That is the type of stuff Law brings to the table. This is promising.

SMP? LINER NOTES: By the way, as Deadspin notes here, Page 2 is also now giving a daily spot to DJ Gallo, which is another point in Page 2's favor.
